Emotions and Communication

The course concerns the role of emotions in human communication and behavior. Vast proportion of human communication is emotional, e.g., emotional facial expressions, gestures, olfactory signals, speech prosody etc. Moreover, emotions control our cognitive processes, behavior and decision making. Overall, emotions are the key process integrating our behavior into "goal-directed behavior"

Emotions are obviously complex phenomena. Therefore, physiological, biological, social and cultural aspects of emotions are discussed during the course. The course gives a good overview of emotions from these different viewpoints, which should be applicable also for anyone interested in human-computer interaction. Practical tasks concentrate on specific topics within emotions and communication. Participance as a research subject gives a practical viewpoint into emotion-related research.
